About The Process & Product

No two firings are ever alike, so there's nothing more exciting than
opening up the kiln after a glaze firing and looking inside
for the very first time.
It's like cracking open a geode!

The potter's kiln has evolved from a simple fire pit to kilns fired with wood. Today, most of the modern kilns are fueled with gas or electricity. The Timberlake kilns are high fire, propane kilns that can withstand temperatures up to 2500 degrees F.

The process of making ceramic art is long and arduous.  After throwing, trimming, carving, appliqueing, sculpting and thoroughly drying the pieces,
they go into the kiln for an 8 hour bisque firing (to 1600 Degrees F.),
which renders the ware durable enough to handle and glaze.

The glazing process is detailed and intricate, with the use of various techniques like; dipping, pouring, syringe application, wax resist, stains, hand-painting, etc..
Once the ware is glazed, it is returned to the kiln for a second, 13 hour firing,
which culminates at Cone 10, 2400 degrees F.

When the glaze firing is done, the ware needs to cool for almost 24 hours, before it can safely be removed from the kiln without cracking.  The bottom of every piece is sanded smooth, while being closely scrutinized for any production anomalies.
The ware is now ready for market.

The Neptune Collection ware is made with a high fire stoneware.  Essentially, it is vitrified clay turned into stone coated in glass.  There is no container that cooks or stores food better than this durable, high fire, non-toxic, lead-free stoneware.
It is made with natural components from the Earth,
and natural oxides for colorant like copper, iron, tin, zinc and cobalt.

Pottery distributes the heat evenly while cooking, nothing makes a more perfect pie crust.  Food can be safely stored in pottery, simply by putting a plate over a bowl, which can then be stacked on top of other bowls in your refrigerator.

This ware is oven, microwave and dishwasher safe.

Avoid "thermal shock", do not take pottery from the refrigerator to a hot oven.  Never put pottery on or near a direct flame or a hot electric coil.

The glazes offer a non-stick surface for easy clean up.
Once you cook with or eat from pottery, you'll be hooked for life!
